So I'm bored at work (again today) and though well I could leave if I had a way of signing myself out of my instant messaging client (Lotus Notes). We use it as sort of an unoffical timeclock (as we are all salaried). After some fooling around I had a batchfile setup to kill my notes client via command line. I added a scheduled task to windows (Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks). I played around with it some more to make sure that it would kill it if the computer was locked (it does). I had a problem with it if it had a notification up so I disabled popup notifications after 4pm in my Notes calendar heh.
Here is the (very simple) batch file contents in case I forget it later:

TF2 - OS Paged Pool Memory Low
Been getting that error message in Team Fortress 2 (TF2) that results in all sorts of graphical glitches to where I quit the game after 20 minutes of play. Turns out a registry setting needed updating (weird!). So I thought I would put it here so I don't lose it.
Here's what you do:
Start Menu > Run > regedit
Surf down to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager\Memory Management
Double click on "PagedPoolSize". Hexadecimal is listed first. Change the "Value Data" to one of these below:
(Note: You only need to enter EITHER Hexadecimal or Decimal. They both are the same.)
Megabytes Hexadecimal Decimal
192Mb 0c000000 201326592
256Mb 10000000 268435456
384Mb 18000000 402653184 There you go. It is now fixed. I have mine to 384Mb and everything works fine!
I found it at http://forums.facepunchstudios.com/showthread.php?t=491302

Cool Things I Found
Nothing special, just figured I'd drop some stuff on here I though was cool.
BrickArms (Weapons Dealer for Lego)
BedUp (Store your bed in your ceiling to save space)
This is kind of related to the BedUp thing, 43 square feet of furniture
Also info on our stupid policy of Daylight Savings Time and how it most likely is a waste of time and energy (and thus money).

EVE - Making Money as a Newbie
You have several viable options as a newbie to make some ISK to pay for whatever it is you want to do. I am assuming you have decided to go full monty and pay for your first month, if not and are still on a trial you won't have nearly as much success with options 1 and 4.
1. Mining (aft mining, normal mining and ore theft)
2. Ratting (killing NPC pirates for bounties and loot)
3. Salvaging
4. Trade (requires some starting capital)
5. PVP (believe it or not you can make money doing this)
6. Missions (money comes from the mission pay itself, bounties on rats in missions, loot, salvage and LP store offers)
1. Mining
We will start with a super-simple legitimate way to mine afk (this is not macro-mining). Train into an industrial (wreathe or hoarder for Minmatar). This will require frigate 3 (already have if you went with the build/start posted) and mining 1 (all characters start with this skill) and of course Minmatar Industrial (level 1 for wreathe, level 2 for Hoarder). While not required fitting cargo expanders will help you hold more (if you find that it is full when you wake up, this requires Hull Upgrades 1 to fit. After you have trained the skills find a 1.0 or .9 system with some veldspar in it (most should have some its just a matter of which ones have larger roids. Find the largest roid you can (just eyeball them or use a survey scanner) and approach and turn on your mining laser. Then go to sleep. The hold will fill up with the mined ore until either your hull is full or the roid runs out of ore. You can then sell that ore to buy orders in a nearby station or refine it yourself and sell the minerals you get from the refine. Just do the math on which pays more.
For Reference - Mining Scythe
High
3x Miner II (mining 4) (or use miner I/named miner)
Medium
1x 10 MN Afterburner, if you can fit it
1x Asteroid Scanner, whichever you prefer.
Low
2x Expanded Cargohold
1x Co-Processor I (electronics upgrades 1)
The second way of mining is a little more complicated as you have several options. I will assume you are Minmatar since that is what I am advocating in this set of posts. You can mine in a Burst (frigate) or a Scythe (cruiser). Both of these get mining bonuses. Technically you can mine in any ship (and some will do so in battlecruisers and battleships because of large around of turret hardpoints for lasers, large fitting capacity and spots for a tank and mining upgrades). You can mine into your hold and then dock at a station to drop off the ore or mine into a jet can. To create a "jet can" right click ore in your hold and select the option to "Jettison". This will create a container in space with a lifespan of approximately an hour (it's best to name it the time it with your name and the time it was created so you can empty it before it disappears). Once you are either near capacity or running low on time then dock your miner, undock in your hauler and scoop the ore from the can into your hold and dump it into the station. You could also have a friend doing this for you. IMPORTANT NOTE: TRIAL ACCOUNTS CANNOT TRAIN INDUSTRIALS (HAULERS). A problem you will encounter is some people will come by and steal your ore, you may need to just mine into your hold, dock and then resume mining if you have this problem.
The third way is not really mining and it's not really pvp. It is ore theft. What am I talking about you ask? Well there are people and macro miners that sit in hisec and mine veldspar or some other lowend mineral. They are protected because if you attack them then Concord shows up and destroys your ship. What is a macro miner you ask? Well that is when someone is using a program to do all the mining for them (typically the name will be a jumble of constanants and be unpronouncable). These typically mine 23 hours a day (1 hour for downtime) and have a dedicated hauler. The trick is to find a system where they are operating. I myself started out in Ashab as there as a glut of them about a year ago there, you will have to just look around in higher security space for them. The idea would be to get a hauler (I used a badger II but a hoarder or wreathe probably works just as well). You can fly to belts and if you see a jet can in the belt just right click it and set bookmark. I would do these in your pod or a non-hauler ship so they don't get tipped off before you show up next to their can. Once you have one or more bookmarked get your hauler and warp to zero to that can and dump as much into your cargo hold as possible. Then run to the station and dock and drop your stolen ore off. If nobody has said anything in local try to take more. Be advised, once you take from someone's can they have the right to shoot you without Concord showing up to do anything about it. This can be a problem if it is a real player, they will usually dock, get a combat ship and hunt you down or sit in the belt and wait for you to show up again then blow you up. It's a risk, that is why it is sort of like pvp. You can also fit one or more guns and a shield tank on your hauler (the Battle badger is semi-famous), see below. You can probably fit something similar for pretty much any hauler out there.
Newbie Battlebadger
LOWS
3x Expanded Cargohold I (or a mix of inertial stabilizers, warp core stabilizers and cargo expanders)
MIDS
1MN Afterburner I
2x Medium Shield Extender I
Warp Disruptor I (just in case another hauler wants to fight)
Invulnerability Field I
Heat Dissipation Field I
HIGHS
125mm Railgun I (just in case another hauler wants to fight)
With that setup which maybe cost me a million ISK I was stealing about 10M ISK a day in ore just fooling around. I also scored a kill on another hauler who attacked me for taking the ore that HE WAS STEALING FROM A MACRO MINER!
2. Ratting
This is essentially just getting a ship, loading it with guns and a tank and going into asteroid belts and shooting the red plus signs you see there. If you select one it will show the bounty in the overview. Just get into optimal range for your guns and let loose. It would be best to set your orbit distance to about 500m or 1000m under your optimal. If you are using artillery you probably don't want to orbit. With either autocannons or artillery you will most likely want to fit a webber (Stasis Webifier I is an example). I would suggest using at least a cruiser to do this in, with a cruiser you should be able to rat down to .5 system rats with no real issue. As you are minmatar you can tailor your ammo to do the most damage to the rats you are fighting. To get an idea of what damage to do to rats check out http://eve.grismar.net/rats/index.php for information on rat resists. Try to do the damage type they are weakest to. Based on that weakness pick the best projectile ammo for the job (ratting Angels you would use Fusion). While you may be able to rat in lower security systems you will most likely be attacked by someone looking to pvp. You can look at a character's history (start date, corporate information) by right clicking that person's picture in local and selecting show info. This will tell someone who is looking to attack you how long you have been training for (Not skillpoints just time since you were "born"). Based on how "young" you are you are more likely to get attacked by someone looking for an easy mark, I would just say stay out of lowsec for now unless you are looking for PVP (then see section 5).
3. Salvaging
This requires the skill Salvaging. You will need mechanic 3 (should be in your starting character build) and survey 3 before you can get salvaging 1. I would recommend taking salvaging to at least 2 with the goal being 3. What this does is allow you to use a high slot module called a Salvager (wow Surprise!) to sort of search the wreck for useful parts (not loot). This yields about 10 different types of components on Angel rat wrecks, the most valuable being Alloyed Tritanium bars which go for something like 300,000 ISK each in most hubs (Jita/Rens). You are not stealing anything here and will not get flagged to be killed. However if you also take left over loot in the wrecks the owner of that wreck does get kill rights for 15 minutes (yes even in high sec). You can see who owns the wreck by right clicking it and choosing show info. This will pop up a window about the wreck with the pilot's picture. Click on the pilot's picture and you will get the pilot's info. If you see this guy in your Local chat window you might want to avoid looting that wreck (though salvaging it is safe).
4. Trade
Relatively simple yet complex at the same time. The general advice is "buy low, sell high". This is essentially how it works however you need to do some research which obviously takes time. The simple version of this is to go to a hub (Jita/Rens) and look at implants. Then go to surrounding regions (not system, region!) and see if those same implants (shoot for +3 implants, IE: Basic) are like a million or less below the lowest sell order in that hub you checked. You can then buy that implant move it to the hub and put it up for sale for the lowest price. You may have to change your price if someone undercuts you but thats the basic priciple. Find something that sells for more somewhere else. If you get to be hardcore about trading you will want to train up some hauling skills and also some trade skills (Broker relations to 4 and Accounting to 4 is a good start).
5. PVP
While you can make money at PVP it's more likely you will lose money at PVP. The way you would make money is by blowing someone up and stealing whatever is left in their wreck. I have scored some decent stuff of of miners in lowsec like strip miners (selling for like one million each) and some other mods they may have. Same applies to combat ships, they may drop a named gun that is better than what you have or something else that maybe you don't need but that can be sold on the market for a profit. Some people make their careers as a pirate, I have not done this (yet) but I am sure it must be feasible on some level.
6. Missions
If you plan on running missions you should get Social to at least 3 (4 is the goal) and Connections to at least 2 (4 is the goal here as well). For more pay you train the Negotiation skill (4 is the goal though 5 is really only about 5 days). The "easiest" ship to run missions with (specifically Level 4 missions) is the Caldari Raven. If you are following this guide and training Minmatar, the typhoon is sort of a mini-Raven (fits 4 cruise missiles vs the Raven's 6), can't fit as heavy a tank but it can field 5 heavy drones which can be nice. You could also fit 2 medium guns for dealing with smaller ships but don't take my advice on missioning Typhoons as gospel as I don't use them myself (Battlecruisers/Command ships on down for Minmatar). The other option for mission running as Minmatar is the Maelstrom as it can fit a monster shield tank and up to 8 guns depending on fitting, skills and need.
A great way to kickstart your mission running for a Minmatar corp is do a few specific missions which I will outline for you. These will require that you purchase 30 Angel Copper Tags off of the market though they should be fairly inexpensive especially if you place a buy order in Minmatar/Angel space. First off you should have gotten an EVEmail after finishing the tutorial saying "Go visit this dude, I think he has a job for you." By all means do those missions for this guy. They are simple and will net you some stuff you can use as well as a decent amount of ISK (for a newbie). With that money you can probably afford those Copper Tags. Go to the following systems; Engosi, Arlulf and Emolgranlan (no particular order) and talk to the two agents in the "DED" area (bronze icon in your overview when you reach the system). One of these agents wants you to talk to someone else and bring back a signed certificate saying you talked to them (you get it at the place you are directed to). The other agent wants 10 Angel Copper Tags. Complete all 6 of these agents and that initial post tutorial "other guy" missions and you should have a great start on Minmatar faction standing as well as corporate standings to (I think) republic security services. You can then get better agents faster by using this start.
A simple guide to what ships to use for what levels of missions:
L1 - Destroyer or better
L2 - Cruiser or better
L3 - Battlecruiser or better
L4 - Heavily tanked Battlecruiser (drake) or
Battleship - these are best done with more than 1
though they can be done with only one character easily
enough, its just slower.
Some advice for running mission as Minmatar (I run mine as Caldari heh)
As for fitting on missions you can go a couple of different ways as minmatar (I personally run missions as caldari - Raven/Drake). You can go autocannons or artillery. Prolly fit a web with both, if you go artillery you made need a tracking mod to allow you track close range stuff that orbits you fast (like drones). You can alternatively get into range then burn away from them with your arty firing to cut down on that transversal problem. It also helps to have drones 5 so that you can field a set of drone to deal with cruisers and other drones. When you get to
battlecruiser level a hurricane is probably your best bet (6 guns 2 launchers, shield tank mids and damage mods lows) though I have heard the cyclone is also very good for pve stuff.

Update to "EVE is pissing me off"
Seems a lot of my problem was older ATI video drivers. I updated them to latest and greatest as well as moving sound acceleration under the DXDIAG utility down to basic fixed 90% or so of the problem. I may reinstall EVE to make sure I have a stable install (as I upgraded from Revalations to Trinity instead of a fresh Trinity install). I also disabled the "secondary" card that showed up in device manager for my ATI X1950pro as it was dual head and I only use 1 monitor.

Notes for newbies:
Do the tutorial
For the love of god do the tutorial
Never have your character not training (even during the tutorial)
You can pause a skill train without losing any skillpoints, so pause skill training on a short skill and start a long one before you go to bed (like Gunnery 4 or 5)

Ok so I worked through the tutorial, now what?
I recommend you purchase a better ship that that junker they gave you to start with, you cannot go wrong flying a Rifter (see fitting below). If you fit as shown EFT will tell you what skills you are missing (assuming you loaded your character into EFT). You can kill NPC pirates in a system (commonly referred to as "ratting") to gain cash and loot you can sell or use. Systems you can rat in with a rifter are probably .6 - .8 (no rats in .9 or 1.0 space). Cruisers you can probably rat in .8 down to .3 or so (maybe lower, try it an see). The lower the security rating the harder the rats. With regard to PvP it can only be performed in .4 and below space, if you attack someone in .5 and above space the space police (Concord) will show up and blow your ship up. In . 3 and .4 there are sentry guns on the gates and stations that will shoot at anyone attacking another player (these can be tanked in a well fit battlecruiser or battleship), in a cruiser or frigate do not instigate any fights at a gate or station. Fighting other players (ganking) should be done in an asteroid belt (this is where ore and NPC pirates are spawned). Also if you attack another player you get a Global Criminal Countdown in the upper left of your screen, if you warp to a gate or station before that timer expires they will fire on you.

Had a decent Xmas
Not too bad, pretty much everything was exactly what I wanted (thinkgeek.com wishlist ftw!). Had 5 days off of work, it almost seemed like I had no days off (other than sleeping in) as it was all rush-rush to get stuff done before xmas then there's all sorts of travel and family functions that day. I really should have taken the 26th off if I wanted a relaxing day. However working on the 26th was great, everyone left me alone because nobody was here. Made record progress at the jobsite - whoo hooo.

EVE is pissing me off
I've been playing EVE Online for over a year now, I am up to paying for 5 accounts currently (that's how much I was enjoying it). Not so much anymore and a lot of it could have been prevented with a decent QC staff at CCP. Trinity brought some overdue improvements in the form of drone management and fleets. It also brought a graphics engine update which I could care less about. What is most disturbing is the increased frequency of crash-to-desktop, lockups and BSODs I get when I play it. With the new engine comes the need for more horsepower. I used to play with 2 clients on my fileserver (1.5ghz, 1 gig ram, geforce 4). With the latest expansion this is no longer possible for me, its way to laggy and even doing courier missions aren't worth the trouble as there's five to ten seconds of lag on each command (when running 2 clients) which is annoying as hell. This wouldn't be such an issue if my main gaming rig didn't crash every 20 minutes or so when EVE is running. If it was at least consistent with when it crashes I could assume heat buildup or something but I can't seem to get it to crash consistently. I have tested the ram thoroughly, I have swapped out video cards (Geforce 6600 GT to an ATI X1950 Pro), I have reinstalled windows, I have disabled sound and nothing seems to prevent this. I can run 4 clients simultaneously on my main gaming rig but when only 1 of the 4 crashes to desktop I am sitting there saying what the fuck?! Or the machine bluescreens or locks up and I come very close to losing a ratting ship because while my system has crashed EVE just thinks I am sitting there doing nothing. This is incredibly bad if I am ratting as my ship may die due to being attacked. This makes it difficult for me to PvE and impossible to PvP. Ok, so the third machine that I use sometimes is my work laptop (1.4ghz Intel Centrino, 1 gig ram, ATI X300). This has become unplayable as well since Trinity came out. It now locks up on me when EVE is running. I have to power it off and back on again, it doesn't respond to anything. I have the latest Microsoft approved drivers (maybe that's a problem, who knows). Now it might sound like I am picking on EVE but it's the only game that ever crashes on my gaming rig. I also play Warcraft 3, Unreal Tournament 3, CounterStrike, Quake 3/4 and a few others and none of them ever crash (I tend to play 3 or 4 hours at a time), it seems to be EVE and EVE alone. At this point I will just let all of my accounts expire while training something long and come back at a later date to see if they got their act together yet. Bummer.
Trying to put the blog back up
I have pretty much given up trying to get old content moved here, I mean who gives a shit. I have a few friends who might check this site just to see if I am still alive, other than that no real fans. I'm not complaining though, just stating the facts.
I'll probably use this mostly as a way to keep my own crap in a place where I can find it.
I am currently running this off a Blogger account with custom domain publishing which allows me to use www.vulgardisplayofpower.com instead of somename.blogger.com.
